A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) plans to establish a work zone along a section of KY 2830/Julia Avenue in Owensboro starting Tuesday.

The work zone runs along KY 2830/Julia Avenue (Old U.S. 60) from the KY 144 intersection at mile point 0.0 extending eastward to the KY 2830 Connector/Hawes Avenue near the Hawesway Truck Stop at mile point 1.718.

The contractor will be removing pavement along the shoulder to allow the roadway to be reconfigured from a 4-lane to a 3-lane with a center turn lane.

Approximately 2,600 vehicles travel this section of KY 2830 in an average day. Traffic along this section of KY 2830/Julia Avenue has been greatly reduced since the U.S. 60 extension project was completed, reducing the need for 4 travel lanes. Once the shoulder work is completed, the center lanes of the existing roadway will be re-paved to create the new 3-lane roadway with a center turn lane.

This section of KY 2830 runs parallel to New U.S. 60 near the KY 144 Owensboro Exit 21 interchange.

Yager Materials, LLC, is the prime contractor on this $1.2 million highway improvement project that includes paving along a 5-mile section of U.S. 60 to be scheduled at a later date. The target completion date for all work on the project is November 15, 2019.

Motorists should be alert for one-lane traffic with alternating flow controlled by flaggers to facilitate this work along KY 2830. Appropriate caution is required where equipment, flaggers, and construction personnel are along the roadway in close proximity to traffic.

The contractor and KYTC will provide timely notice when the work along U.S. 60 is scheduled.
