The Owensboro Human Relations Commission (HRC) will host a celebration event Saturday to honor Native American Heritage Month. The event will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on the front lawn of Kentucky Wesleyan College.

This celebration will include an honoring of veterans, dancers, drummers, tipi and flute presentations, educational programming, storytelling, a vendor from Lake’s Traditional Foods, crafts, a mobile museum from the Kentucky Native American Heritage Museum and more.

HRC Executive Director Kaitlin Nonweiler said this celebration will provide the community with the opportunity to learn more about the past, present and future of our country.

“This celebration is a way for the commission to promote diversity and inclusion awareness,” she said. “This not only gives Native Americans the opportunity to demonstrate their culture, but also to feel welcomed by the community.”

The HRC would like to thank the family of Hawk and Regina Laughing for their guidance and support in helping to plan this celebration.

“Hawk Laughing is the emcee for the event and a member of the Mohawk tribe and Regina Laughing is Cherokee,” Nonweiler said. “This celebration will include, dancing, singing and praying to give thanks to our creator and to remind everyone that we are one.”
