The Owensboro Convention Center will be hosting country legend, and Kentucky native, Dwight Yoakam Friday night.

Yoakam has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide. His legacy over the last three decades includes 10 gold, platinum, or triple-platinum albums, and 14 top 10 Billboard hits, including “Streets of Bakersfield,” “Ain’t That Lonely Yet,” “Fast As You,” “Honky Tonk Man,” and “Guitars, Cadillacs.”

He is a 21-time nominated, multiple Grammy Award winner and has also received honors from the CMAs, ACMs, and the Artist of the Year honor from the Americana Music Awards, proving his enduring appeal in the alt-country world as well as the mainstream.

Owensboro Convention Center General Manager, Laura Alexander, said

“We’ve had great success with classic country legends in the past, like Travis Tritt and Gary Allan,” Alexander said, “so it was fitting to bring someone with so many top hits like Dwight.’

Yoakam’s latest album, “Swimming Pools, Movie Stars…,” pays homage to his Kentucky roots and love of bluegrass music. Those bluegrass roots have always seemed to seep into Yoakam’s music, from his collaborations to his solo albums.

According to Yoakam’s website, “On the Earl Scruggs and Friends album in 2001, Yoakam co-wrote and sang ‘Borrowed Love’ with another one of the genre’s great banjo players. In the mid-2000s, Yoakam started introducing a bluegrass-style acoustic rave-up mini-set in the middle of his otherwise electrified shows. And it’s been a mutual love affair. The influence he had on bluegrass himself was palpable, most obviously with the release of a Pickin’ on Dwight Yoakam bluegrass tribute album. Just this July, the group Flatt Lonesome was nominated for an International Bluegrass Music Award for Best Song for their cover of Yoakam’s ‘You’re the One.’”

Yoakam will be bringing his award-winning, multi-genre style of music to the stage tomorrow night at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.
