Owensboro native Trey Douglas launched Retro Lids when he was just 12 years old with the help of his father. Fast-forward 3 years, and he’s joining forces with Superior Streetwear at 3032 Alvey Park Drive West. The two stores combine to offer vintage shoes, apparel, hats, and more.

Superior Streetwear – owned by Branson Russell and Matthew Ball – welcomed the partnership with Retro Lids, hoping to provide a unique shopping experience for the tristate.

“They came to our shop one day, and we started talking about their business,” Russell said. “I knew they had a great collection that needed to be seen in Owensboro. People love their hats — especially from the ’80s and ’90s — and this partnership brings something new to the community.”

The collaboration aims to create a one-stop shop for customers seeking a range of vintage items, from clothing to accessories.

“We feel like this partnership adds a whole new aspect to our store,” Ball said. “Now you can come in and get shoes, hats, clothes, pants — everything in one place.”

Douglas is excited about the new storefront.

“Moving to a store helps us reach more people,” he said. “Some people don’t have social media, so now they can come in, see what we have, and find hats they might like.”

Retro Lids started as a small business, buying vintage hats for as little as 25 cents at yard sales and growing into a collection of over 1,000 hats.

“We started off just specializing in agriculture hats,” said Donald Douglas, Trey’s father. “But now we’re expanding into vintage sports hats and other types to meet the growing demand for vintage clothing and accessories.”

The hats have been featured at the store for a couple of weeks, but they plan to hold a grand opening soon.

“We’ve been busy, just advertising on Facebook and through Superior Streetwear,” Donald said. “But we’re excited to officially open our doors to the public.”

Trey, a sophomore in high school, balances his studies with running his business. He receives strong support from his family and the owners of Superior Streetwear.

“They’ve been great,” Donald said of the Russell and Ball. “They pick him up from school, bring him to the shop, and help him out. It’s been like a big brother relationship, and Trey looks up to them.”

The community can look forward to the grand opening event in the coming weeks. For now, shoppers can visit the new location and explore the wide range of vintage items available.
