Owensboro’s Angela Waninger has been named the 2024 Finance Officer of the Year by the Kentucky Government Finance Officers Association.
“It is humbling and exciting at the same time,” said Waninger, who’s served as the City of Owensboro’s director of finance and support services since 2012. “It reinforces my passion for doing what I do. I am thankful to the KGFOA Executive Board for this award and to my colleagues who submitted the nominations.
KGFOA President Steve Webb said Waninger’s nomination “was filled with nothing but praise from so many colleagues who work alongside her every single day. KGFOA is fortunate to have her as part of our organization.”
Waninger noted she wouldn’t have received the recognition without the help from her staff. Waninger oversees the City’s finance, human resource, and IT operations. She also oversees and works on projects for the city manager.
“I feel that this award is also a reflection of the support and collaboration I have from my staff, city administration, and our elected officials. For that, I am thankful to each of them,” she said.
A certified public accountant and a chartered global management accountant, Waninger is president of the Kentucky Government Finance Officers Association and serves on the Kentucky League of Cities Board of Directors. She is a trustee for the Kentucky League of Cities Investment Pool, and she serves on the City Employee Pension Fund Board and the Police and Firefighters’ Retirement Fund Board in Owensboro.
Waninger has volunteered as a budget award reviewer for the National Government Finance Officer Association since 2009, reviewing and commenting on city budgets nationwide. She has served on the United Way of the Ohio Valley board since 2013, serving on the executive board for 4 of those years. She has been a court-appointed special advocate, advocating for children’s best interests. Waninger recently attained the Kentucky League of Cities Level 1-Achievement in City Governance.
In December, she was named to The Kentucky Gazette’s “2023 Notable Women in Kentucky Politics and Government.”
