Michaels — a national arts and crafts retail store — is on track to open its Owensboro location in late January, company officials confirmed. The store will be taking over the former Books-A-Million space located in the Towne Square North Shopping Center.

A “community-focused grand opening celebration” is expected to take place in early February, with a ribbon cutting, giveaways, demos, and more.

“Michaels is excited to be joining the community in Owensboro,” Rachel Petersen, Head of Corporate and Product Communications, previously told Owensboro Times in an email. “We chose Owensboro based on the opportunity to bring Michaels closer to our customers. We know it’s a community of Makers, teachers, parents, small business owners, and creatives who will find the inspiration and supplies they need in our new store.”

Renovations are still underway inside the building, though signage has gone up and they are looking to hire.

The store will officially be located at 4606 Frederica Street. The space has been empty since Books-A-Million closed in 2020.

Michaels is one of North America’s largest providers of arts, crafts, framing, floral and wall décor, and merchandise for makers and do-it-yourself home decorators.

As of January 2021, there were 1,252 Michaels stores in 49 out of 50 states in the U.S., and Canada, with approximately $5.362 billion in sales for fiscal 2020.
