Kentucky State Police are cracking down on driving under the influence as part of the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. Aside from implementing statewide DUI enforcement until Labor Day weekend, KSP will conduct safety checkpoints to address other traffic laws during this campaign.

KSP Public Affairs Officer Corey King said troopers will work overtime during the Drive Sober campaign in effort to get more impaired drivers off the streets.

“The campaign is a way for agencies to bring awareness, but as we get into the holiday months, we typically see more DUIs,” King said. “Troopers get overtime money to stay on the road and work longer, especially in the evenings.”

The campaign, which officially started August 12, will see more state troopers on patrol, especially in what King called “problem areas” that see a lot of impaired driving.

King said law enforcement across Kentucky is seeing an increase in drug-related DUIs, which complicates things for troopers as they aren’t as easy to test for.

Troopers will set up road checks in Daviess County and Owensboro — along with Hancock, Ohio McLean, Henderson and Webster Counties — in the near future, and King said those locations will be announced ahead of time.

“We partner with federal partners to allow troopers more time to focus on DUI enforcement,” King said. “This is just a really great reminder — during a time when there’s more fall parties, and the weather is getting cooler and there’s less humidity — to make good decisions when driving.”
