To help relieve stress for local residents, Western Kentucky Elder Law, PLC, Kurtis Sunset will draft two documents free of charge until April 1. These documents include a Power of Attorney and Living Will Directive.

A Power of Attorney designates a person, normally a spouse, child, family member, or trusted neighbor, to act on behalf of the person in regard to the person’s financial and health decisions.

A Living Will Directive allows the person to designate a healthcare surrogate that ensures that the person’s wishes in regard to life-prolonging treatment are followed should these decisions become necessary.

These documents are important for everyone in all circumstances but become essential for anyone hospitalized.

Sunset said in these unique times, the Power of Attorney will also help an elder person or person at higher risk to minimize social contact and provide safe social distancing procedures by allowing a person with less risk to act on their behalf.

As an attorney that deals primarily with elder clients, Sunset said he understands the potential risks associated with this pandemic on these members of our community.

“I want to do my part to help area residents, especially those at high risk, be fully prepared should the pandemic reach our neighborhoods,” he said.

For more information call Western Kentucky Elder Law, PLC at 270-684-4811.

During this time, Sunset said they will take the information required for these documents over the phone and ask that there be no walk-ins. This will minimize any unnecessary contact through a sit-down consultation that this process would normally require.

He said they will also take extra precautions and have a drive-up service to complete the signatures required for the forms.

“As far as advice, some people may feel these documents are not essential right now,” Sunset said. “However, at the point in which they become essential, it will be nearly impossible to have them created and signed with the legal requirements that make them valid, especially if the person is under quarantine.”
