One person is dead after a water emergency where a vehicle flipped and became submerged in a retention basin, according to the Owensboro Police Department. The investigation is ongoing.

According to reports, OPD was dispatched at approximately 12:07 p.m. Monday to a water emergency in the 5000 block of Wildcat Way, near the Walmart on South Frederica Street.

Officers, along with members from the Owensboro Fire Department, located a victim in the vehicle and began attempting life-saving measures. However, the victim died from injuries on site.

Members of the OPD Accident Reconstruction Team, along with Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division, responded and are investigating. The Daviess County coroner was also called to the scene.

OPD Public Information Officer Andrew Boggess said at this point, the incident is being investigated as a water emergency. He said the depth of the basin varies.

“We’ve had a significant amount of rain over the last few hours so it’s fairly deep at this point,” Boggess said. “It’s my understanding that the vehicle was almost completely submerged.”

Boggess said they are not yet sure how long the vehicle was submerged, or what the circumstances were leading up to the incident.

The victim has been identified but the name has not been released in order to notify the family.
