Yellow Creek Park’s historic truss bridge will be closed for the next four months as contractors work to rehabilitate the structure. The project will keep the iron truss structure intact, while the wooden deck will be replaced with concrete.

Because the bridge provides access to the Nature Center and hiking trails at the southern end of the park, patrons who want to access those areas will have to use the south entrance of the park off Reid Road for the next few months. Officials said the project should be completed by May 30.

Daviess County Parks and Recreation Director Ross Leigh said the project is expected to begin next week.

Leigh also commended the efforts that will go into keeping the historic iron truss structure in place. The bridge was originally built in the late 1800s and carried vehicle traffic on KY 762 in eastern Daviess County before being relocated to Yellow Creek Park in 1985.

“It’s the greatest compromise to not only be able to save something of historic nature, but also to know we can continue to access it and welcome people to our Nature Center at Yellow Creek Park,” Leigh said in a statement released by Daviess County Fiscal Court.

Contractors with Ragle Inc. — a general contracting company out of Newburgh, Ind. —  will also pressure wash and paint the iron truss structure. In October, Fiscal Court approved a $338,500 bid for the project.
