Customers are continuing to make a big dent in the initial $1.54 million owed to Owensboro Municipal Utilities in past-due expenses because of COVID-19. Roughly 1,000 customers are still on plans to pay back the remaining $602,690 owed.

Most of the reduction of balance is because of payments received, but some is due to the closure of accounts.

OMU General Manager Kevin Frizzell, provided the update during their monthly meeting, noting there were 1,861 payment plan accounts initially created.

Additionally, Frizzell said there are 235 accounts (217 residential) owing a total of $49,564 that are eligible for disconnection — 217 of which are residential. Last month, 335 accounts (314 residential) owing $72,420 were eligible.

Disconnections are prioritized based on the largest and longest unpaid balances.

Customers in need are encouraged to apply for state and federal funds that can assist them with rent and utilities. One such program currently taking applications is the Home Eviction Relief Fund

Frizzell said OMU plans to open the customer service lobby to the public on May 3. For now, those needing assistance can still utilize the drive-thru window. Other options include online bill payment and payment-by-phone.

Once the lobby opens, measures that will be in place include:

  • Masks will be required for entry and provided if needed
  • Limited number of customers inside the lobby at the same time to ensure proper social distancing is maintained
  • Automatic, no-touch hand sanitizing stations will be available
  • Frequently touched surfaces and objects will be disinfected at least twice a day
  • The lobby is equipped with a permanent glass barrier, which provides full separation between employees and customers
