Former KWC assistant coach charged with rape in Evansville

A former assistant men’s basketball coach at Kentucky Wesleyan College was charged with rape Tuesday morning in Evansville. 

Cardell J. McFarland, a 33-year-old resident of Evansville, was arrested by the Evansville Police Department and is being held in the Vanderburgh County Jail for an alleged incident that occurred Monday night at the victim’s home.

According to the affidavit from EPD, the victim said she had plans to hang out with McFarland but let him know beforehand that she was not interested in having sex. The victim said as McFarland tried to force himself on her multiple times, she “probably said no like thirty (30) times” but he continued.

After being located by EPD, McFarland agreed to questions. According to the affidavit, McFarland first denied any involvement; then admitted to being at the residence but denied having sex; then admitted having sex with the victim. He later recanted the story, according tot the affidavit.

Cardell, who also played for KWC for the 2010 and 2011 seasons, served as an assistant coach Wesleyan last season. His contract ended last month.

“Cardell McFarland was a member of the Kentucky Wesleyan College men’s basketball coaching staff for the 2020-21 season,” according to a statement from KWC Vice President for Advancement Eddie Kenny. “His temporary employment assignment came to an end in April. Kentucky Wesleyan College will work with law enforcement as needed, allowing the legal process to take its course.”
