Food Trucks and Fireworks

Owensboro Christian Church is looking to bring the community together with the return of their Food Trucks and Fireworks event this Sunday. The event will kick off at 7 p.m. with the first food orders being taken, while the fireworks display will start at 8:45 p.m.

This will be the third year the church has hosted the event, though COVID-19 forced its cancellation in 2020.

Kegan DeWitt, OCC Communications Director and Elementary Ministry staff member, said that he’s thrilled to celebrate a return to normalcy of sorts with the community.

“It’s really kind of just a great celebration of being back to normalcy,” DeWitt said. “Especially with the mask mandate just being lifted… Just being able to get back together [is nice]. It’s been such a great event for us in the past, so it’s just nice to be able to do that again so quickly right after everything has been lifted.”

DeWitt said that the idea for the event came from something he found online, and it has turned into a way to bring large crowds of people together.

“I just kind of came across the idea on the internet, somewhere up north had done something similar,” DeWitt said. “And then we partnered it with our Vacation Bible School as kind of just a family night and then it just kind of evolved into a great all-around community event that can stand on its own.”

There will be a plethora of food trucks on site, as well as inflatable activities for the kids.

“The good thing is with Owensboro we’ve got a good variety,” DeWitt said. “We’ve got your desserts, we’ve got your burgers, we’ve got your wings, pizza; whatever you like, we’ve got something for everybody.”

The food trucks on site will include Curbside Kitchenette, Hodge’s Curbside Creamery, J’s Good Grub, Kona Ice of Owensboro, Real Hacienda Express, Roadrunner Watkins Pizza Rolls, Taqueria La Bendicion, The Spot Coffee, and Tri-R-Tips Hawaiian BBQ.

When it comes to the fireworks, OCC buys them from a vendor in Central City. Church member Rafe Martin puts it all together in order to light up the night sky.

“He just builds a whole show,” DeWitt said of Martin. “He’s been doing it at various camps and stuff like that. He puts the whole show together, stages it all out, ignites it and then kind of lets it go from there.”

DeWitt said that his favorite part of the event is how it brings everyone together for a great time during the summer.

“I love how it doesn’t matter where you’re from or what you like to do, it’s just one of those events that brings the entire area together,” DeWitt said. “I grew up in Owensboro. Owensboro is very near and dear to my heart, so whenever I can see people, be it from Owensboro Chrisitan, various workplaces or other churches in the city [I love it].”
