Tonya Payne has announced that she will run for the office of Daviess County Clerk in the November 2022 election.

Payne said after serving more than two decades in that office, she’s built the knowledge and experience she believes is needed to earn this leadership position.

“I’ve been with the office for 22 years and through those years have prepared myself to one day being able to lead the office,” Payne said. “I have worked in and am knowledgeable about every department.”

Payne said she resigned as supervisor of the election department on Friday.

“The Clerk’s Office is an integral part of the community from the recording of legal documents, vehicle registration and licensing, to the overseeing of the election process,” Payne said.

Payne said because there are so many departments that reach into different aspects of the lives of Daviess County’s citizens, the County Clerk should have a thorough understanding of how each one operates.

“The office needs a leader who is not only familiar with those departments but who can actually work in those departments and be a strong advocate for the deputy clerks who work there,” Payne said. “I am that person.”
