DCSO releases updated details of death investigation in Utica

Update, 12:45 p.m. September 7 — According to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, a follow-up release of information was requested by the family of the deceased. 

Per the updated release, “Daviess County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the Utica area with the reports of an adult female in a lake not breathing. Utica Fire Department along with others was able to remove the adult out of the water. Deputies arrived on scene where the adult had been covered with a blanket due to the sensitivity of the call.” 

According to the release, Daviess County Coroner Jeff Jones said the primary cause of death is drowning with a secondary cause of death of hypoglycemia. No foul play is suspected. 

The woman has also been identified as 68-year-old Jackie Deno.


Update, 9:15 a.m. September 3 — Sheriff Barry Smith said, “…from what I know of the case I would say [the blanket] was placed over her by those that found her.” Foul play is not suspected.


Original story — The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office in investigating a drowning that occurred Friday afternoon in Utica. According to DCSO, first responders responded to the scene at roughly 5:15 p.m. and found an adult female on the side of a pond bank covered in a blanket.

The female was deceased upon arrival, according to DCSO. The female was last seen around 11:30 Friday morning mowing her lawn. According to DCSO reports, the woman drowned.
