The Pub on Second is hosting the Bourbon Lady this Wednesday, October 26, from 7 to 8 p.m. for the second installment of Learnin’ Bourbon. Commonly referred to as the bourbon lady, Barbara Poynter will offer a fun-filled hour centered around bourbon, charcuterie boards, and entertaining at holiday parties.

The event costs $25 and is open to the first 25 women to register. Individuals can register in person at pubonsecond.com.

“Our goal is to make bourbon more approachable,” said Bill Brown with the Pub. “It’s often and wrongfully viewed as a man’s drink. Wrongfully being the operative word because there are tons of people that appreciate it.”

Learnin’ Bourbon is a 4-installment series about all things bourbon, and while the courses run sequentially, Poynter said it’s unnecessary to attend them in order.

The first installment is a typical 101 course, where she details the storied history of the drink and how to drink it in a manner where there is no burn. Tonight’s course is the second installment and details how to craft bourbon-centric charcuterie items and which style of bourbon pairs well with specific food items.

“Even if you missed our first lesson, you should still come. I have a 100% success rate, even with individuals who say they aren’t a ‘bourbon person,’” Poynter said. “I like to equate bourbon to women – you never want to rush it. This super fun evening is full of learning, tasting, information, and laughter.”

Some charcuterie items on the menu include a bourbon-bacon jam, baked brie with a bourbon caramel drizzle, bourbon-infused honey barbecue meatballs, and more.

The third installment will highlight various holiday cocktails and how to create them, while the fourth course details how to cook with bourbon.

Poynter also offers a bourbon trail course, where she will take patrons from east to west or vice versa across Kentucky without leaving their chairs. This 2-hour course features several samples from different distilleries across Kentucky.

“I love bourbon, and I love Kentucky, and there’s no better place to get it,” she said. “The main thing people can expect from these events is fun and learning how to drink bourbon without the burn.”

While the event is for women, men are welcome to join from across the bar and partake in Whiskey Wednesday, when all bourbon drinks are discounted by $1.
