The Opportunity Center of Owensboro partnered with several local providers to host a Spring Fling on Wednesday. After witnessing the popularity of the Tim Tebow Foundation’s Night to Shine, the nonprofit knew there was still a community need.
“Night to Shine is a wonderful event for people with disabilities,” said Opportunity Center communications manager Chelsey Robison. “The event is so popular that tickets sell out very quickly, sometimes leaving people without the opportunity to attend.”
Robison said they created the Spring Fling to help alleviate that problem and allow even more people the chance to attend a dance and feel special.
“The goal of the event is to create a space for people with disabilities to feel loved and seen and give them the opportunity to dress up, dance, and have a great time,” she said. “It’s also a great way to encourage meeting new people and making friends.”
Other agencies involved in the event included Active Day of Owensboro, Bridges of Kentucky, Commonwealth Connections, the Green River Area Down Syndrome Association, Puzzle Pieces, Strategic Partnerships, To the Max, and Wendell Foster.
“We are blessed to have an incredible community of agencies that take pride in working together,” Robison said. “Events like these aren’t just fun; they also help raise awareness about people with disabilities in the community.”
She said the event aligns with each group’s mission of creating endless possibilities for the people they support.
“There’s a whole group of people in the area that have a lot to offer and just need a little support to reach their full potential,” Robison said.
