Motorists traveling through western Daviess County will face a detour beginning next week after construction crews discovered the remains of an older structure beneath the U.S. 60 bridge over Katie Meadow Slough near Stanley.

According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, U.S. 60 will be fully closed between mile points 5.2 and 5.4 starting June 16 for up to 90 days while crews remove the previously unknown buried foundation and continue work on the bridge replacement project.

The bridge replacement originally was scheduled to be completed in phases, with traffic maintained on one side of the bridge while the other side was rebuilt. However, officials said the discovery of the older structure — believed to predate the current bridge, which was built in 1950 — makes that approach impractical.

A marked detour will be in place during the closure, directing traffic along KY 1554 and the Audubon Parkway.

Officials said the bridge carries an average of 2,646 vehicles per day and serves as a key route through western Daviess County.
