Letter to the Editor

The Owensboro Human Relations Commission (OHRC) stands in support with the students and families of the College View Middle School, as well as all the public and private K-12 schools in Owensboro and Daviess County. All students have a right to learn and grow in a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment, free from harassment, bullying, and discrimination. The OHRC calls on the leadership of the school systems, administrators, faculty, and staff, as well as parents, to take accountability for their roles in creating an educational environment in which ALL students, each and every one, feel safe, welcomed, respected, valued, and included.

The mission and role of the OHRC is to “strengthen and unify the Owensboro community by advocating equality, inclusion, and belonging for its DIVERSE Peoples through advocacy, education, empowerment, and accountability.” As such, the OHRC encourages all parents to inquire about the rights of their children in the school system and offers advice for recourse as needed. Furthermore, the OHRC advocates for equality and inclusion, especially for the most vulnerable members of our community through providing venues for collective conversation and action, along with education and training. We invite all students and family members, school administrators, faculty, and staff to contact OHRC for any professional development needs, including resources, sessions, tools, and information. Please reach out to the OHRC at 270-687-8670 or [email protected]. OHRC offices are located on the second floor of the City Hall at 101 East 4th Street, Owensboro, KY 42303.  We hope to see you soon!

Thank you,
Eunice K. Taylor, RN PhD, NE-BC
President of the Owensboro Human Relations Commission
