Local boys soccer teams closed out the week strong on Saturday, as Apollo, Daviess County, Owensboro Catholic and Owensboro all earned wins before rain could claim the day.
Apollo vs. Franklin-Simpson
Following a big district win over Apollo on Friday, they stayed hot on at home with a 1-0 win over Franklin-Simpson.
Senior Cesar Velazquez had the lone goal of the day, bending a shot from about 25 out that hit the post and found the back of the net. He scored on an assist from senior Hunter Dickinson in the 28th minute, while senior keeper Steven Teran grabbed four saves en route to the shutout victory.
The Eagles improve to 4-5 overall with the win, as they will take a few days off before they hit the road to take on Ohio County at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
Daviess County vs. North Oldham
The Panthers were able to get one game of their doubleheader in before weather claimed the day on Saturday, defeating North Oldham 2-1.
Daviess County was able to get a goal early, scoring in the fifth minute with a goal from senior Sean Higgs and an assist from sophomore Cameron Bell. The second goal of the day for the Panthers came in the 27th minute, as senior Nate Daily hit one from 25 out to take a 2-0 lead.
North Oldham went on to score on a PK in the 57th minute, but it was too little too late as Daviess County grabbed the 2-1 win. The Panthers sit at 8-1 overall with the win, as they now work towards preparing for a district matchup against Owensboro at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8.
Owensboro Catholic vs. Grayson County
The Aces bounced back from a tough district loss to Daviess County on Saturday, clicking on all cylinders offensively to grab a 4-0 win over Grayson County.
Owensboro Catholic rattled off 29 shots in the game with 16 of them on goal, while the Cougars were only able to take two shots with one on net. Junior Brody Martin led the way with a brace for the Aces, while seniors Austin Martin and Thomas Eyre both had a goal and an assist.
Senior Alex Garvin also earned an assist, while Parker Jones helped keep Grayson County out of net with one save on the day. Owensboro Catholic now sits at 5-3-3 overall with the win, as they now turn their attention to a home district matchup with Apollo at 7:30 p.m on Thursday, Sept. 8.
Owensboro vs. Meade County
Goals came by the bunches on Saturday for Owensboro, as they were able to dominante offensively in a 7-1 win over Meade County.
Sophomore Ryan Sovar and freshman Junior Rugama led the charge for the Red Devils, grabbing three and two goals respectively while Sovar chipped in two assists as well. Junior Arlo Johnson, sophomore keeper Landon Black and senior Aiden Frego also chipped in an assist each, while junior Sammy Thawng and sophomore Romer Payne had the other two goals on the day.
Owensboro moves to 4-3-2 overall with the win to close out the week, as they will take a couple of days off before taking on Muhlenberg County at 7 p.m. at home on Tuesday.
