The Panthers grabbed their second straight City-County title, with Broughton leading the way individually with his overall score of 73 over the course of two days.

Broughton was unhappy with his first day in which he shot a 39, but he came into day two with a different mindset and was able to grow his confidence with a strong finish to secure the No. 1 spot in the tournament.

“Out there yesterday I just wasn’t trusting myself, trusting my game,” Broughton said. “I came out here today just trying to commit to everything. I knew all day that I was a good player and I just had to show it to everybody.”

Knowing that Grant has struggled in week’s past, Head Coach Lars King was proud of the persistence he showed to lead his team to a championship.

“Super proud of Grant for hanging in there,” King said. “We’ve been waiting for him to kind of bust back through. He started the season off with such a bang and he’s kind of hit a lull here in the mid-season. It was good to see him come out here and shoot one over, but two under today. It was a big plus.”

Dawson Lamb and Grayson Powers followed him up with an 82 each, while Logan Mewes 86 and Hayden Sapp’s 90 rounded out Daviess County’s team score of 323. King is thrilled with his team’s play, hoping that this is a big stepping stone entering the latter half of the season.

“I think it’s a positive going forward,” King said. “323 is one of our better scores of the season as a whole, so again that’s another positive going into regional time. The ultimate goal is to win region or at least get top-two and get to the next step which is back out here, so I hope that this gives us a propeller going forward.”

Given that this is the first time that the Panthers have taken home some first-place hardware this season, King thinks that this is huge for everyone’s confidence. Quoting Ben Hogan who said ‘golf is a game played between the six-inch space between your ears,’ King knows just how big this win can be for their growth going forward.

“From one shot to the next—not even one day—[they] can lose all confidence,” King said. “So any time you win [it’s big]. We talked about it up there, it’s the first time we’ve gotten to take that picture. I took that for granted the last five seasons, because every season we took five or six pictures… So I hope it allows them to gain some confidence in their game and gain some confidence overall to be better towards the end of the season.”

Meanwhile, Owensboro grabbed second as a team with a 344, Owensboro Catholic grabbed third with a 347, Apollo finished fourth with a 371 and Trinity (Whitesville) fifth with a 423. Will Hume led the way for the Red Devils with an 80, grabbing third individually while Houston Danzer grabbed second with a 79.
