Owensboro Catholic came out on top on the girls side in the City-County golf tournament on Wednesday, while the Lady Panthers’ Claire Reynolds grabbed first individually.

Reynolds led the way in the competition with a score of 82, while Apollo’s Mary Ann Lyons grabbed second with a 91 and Daviess County’s Baylie Billingsley grabbed second with a 92. Billingsley was also second on the Lady Panthers herself, while AnnaLee Yager (94) and Leah Coppick (155) rounded out their team score of 423.

Owensboro also had Ellie Watson and Ryann Kasey compete individually, shooting a 116 and 146 respectively. Meanwhile, it was the Lady Aces who grabbed first overall with a score of 390 with Lanie Ann Osborne’s 95 leading the charge.

Hannah Robbins and RC Porter followed behind closely with a 97 and 98, while Conleigh Osborne rounded out the team’s overall score of 390. Head Coach Stacey Scheppers was thrilled with her team’s play, showing out amongst Owensboro’s finest and translating what they do in practice to the match.

“The girls came out yesterday and I had three scores in the 40’s and one 50, which that’s unusual for us this year,” Scheppers said. “That was record-breaking for us, so they’ve been working hard and it’s finally starting to pay off. They really did play well yesterday and they struggled a little bit more today, but they still pulled it out.”

Scheppers said they’ve taken big steps forward in their mental game, learning that if they have a bad hole to put it behind them and improve to still have a strong round. She hopes that grabbing the City-County championship will be a big confidence booster for the group as they hope to play strong in the remaining weeks of the season.

“I want them to finish the season strong,” Scheppers said. “We only have less than two weeks until region now, so I want them to finish strong. I don’t want it to kind of taper out. I want them to be on the golf course every single day. Just because you win once doesn’t mean you get anything in the future, so they still need to work hard and be on the golf course every single day.”
