Following a dominant season on the gridiron, junior Kenyatta Carbon followed it up with a stellar basketball season that has earned him the 2022 Owensboro Times 2022 All-County Player of the Year.

“It means a lot to me to receive this reward,” Carbon said. “All the hard work I put in at practice is really showing.”

Falling to McLean County in the 3rd Region Semifinals, Carbon helped lead the Red Devils to a 22-8 record while going undefeated in district play and grabbing the 9th District Championship.

Carbon led Owensboro in a number of statistical categories, averaging 20.3 ppg and 8.0 rpg. He led the team in scoring while owning a 49.1% clip from the field, a 75.6% mark from the charity stripe and was the team’s leading rebounder as well.

The junior guard feels as though he was able to elevate his game to another level this season by becoming a better rebounder and by being a defender that was capable of guarding one through five.

“I think the way my game may be different from others is the way I get after it and play hard every second of the game,” Carbon said.

Owensboro and Carbon fell short of their goal of making it back to the state tournament, but he is able to look back on this season and recognize one of his favorite moments being a new athletic feat.

“My favorite moment was probably when I got my first actual in-game dunk against Trinity (Whitesville),” Carbon said.

With another season under his belt, Carbon will look to come back next season and reach the state tournament with his teammates. Carbon also wanted to thank his mom for all she has done that has helped him earn the honor of Player of the Year as well.
