Apollo, Daviess County, and Owensboro Catholic baseball started the week off strong, grabbing wins in their respective matchups on Monday.
Apollo vs. Union County
Apollo’s offense was red hot on Monday, grabbing two four run innings late to defeat the Braves 12-2 to extend its winning streak to four games.
The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the second by taking advantage of some free bases. Freshman Sam Holder doubled to leadoff the inning before back-to-back hit-by-pitches loaded the bases with no outs.
Junior Aiden Wells then hit a ground ball to second, but a costly throwing error plated all three runs and Well found himself on second with a 3-0 lead for Apollo heading into the third inning.
After adding a run to their lead in the fourth, the Eagles found themselves battling a late comeback when Union County cut it to 4-2 in the top of the fifth. Apollo’s offense had other ideas, quickly swinging momentum back its way.
A one-run double from Holder and a two-run double from senior Dayton Brown made it 7-2, before a walk with the bases loaded gave the Eagles an 8-2 lead going into the sixth. It was there that a two-out triple from sophomore Will Strode cleared the bases, before Wells singled to run-rule the Braves at a score of 12-2.
Wells had four RBIs to lead Apollo, while Strode had three, Brown had two and Holder and sophomore Noah Cook had one each. Holder led the way as far as hits went, tallying four while Strodes and Wells had two each.
With a pair of road wins and home wins under their belt, the Eagles now have a road matchup against Webster County set for a 5:30 p.m. first pitch tomorrow.
Daviess County vs. Henderson County
After trailing since the third inning, Daviess County was able to regain the lead in the sixth and use that momentum to defeat the Colonels 3-2 at home.
Henderson County got on the board first by taking advantage of a Panthers error, but an RBI double from junior Layton Huskisson quickly knotted things up at 1-1 following the first inning.
The Colonels regained the lead at 2-1 in the top of the third, scoring on a sacrifice fly from senior Andrew Mills. However, after a scoreless fourth inning Daviess County responded and never looked back.
With one out, an error after a Mason Boswell single tied things up at 2-2. The following at-bat, junior Decker Renfrow singled to drive home freshman Lucas Ward and give them a 3-2 lead entering the sixth.
The Panthers pitching staff of junior Jason Loucks, Ethan Ahart and sophomore Lake Wilson proceeded to close the door on a 3-2 win, silencing the Colonels over the last two innings of play.
Huskisson and Renfrow were responsible for the lone RBIs, while junior Cason Troutman and senior Brock Brubaker had a pair of hits each to lead the way for Daviess County.
The Panthers remain undefeated to open the season, taking their 4-0 winning streak into a home game against Trinity (Whitesville) at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Owensboro Catholic vs. Muhlenberg County
The Aces found their stroke halfway through the game, rattling off three consecutive innings with at least one run on their way to a 7-2 road win over Muhlenberg County.
Owensboro Catholic opened up the scoring with a sacrifice fly from senior Braden Mundy, followed by an RBI single from junior Grant Parson to give them a 2-0 lead following the fourth.
The Aces kept things going in the fifth, grabbing an early run thanks to an error before a two-RBI triple from senior Everett Munsey to make it 5-0. Mundy later tripled himself, giving them a 6-0 lead after five.
After adding a run to its lead in the top of the sixth, Owensboro Catholic was able to hold the Mustangs to two runs in the bottom half of the inning and eventually close the door on a 7-2 win an inning later.
Mundy and Munsey led the way for the Aces with two RBIs each, while freshman Parker Hiestand grabbed one and Parson grabbed one to go along with his team-leading two hits.
Senior Alex Castlen pitched a gem for Owensboro Catholic as well, giving up two hits, no runs and struck out five in five innings. Munsey held his own in relief, giving up two unearned runs on three hits over two innings.
Bouncing back with a win, the Aces now sit at 4-1 before they host Henderson County at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
