Following a strong season with the E-gals, Amaya Curry has taken the next step in her basketball career by signing to play collegiately at Bellarmine University.

“It’s a big relief to know where my future will be held for the next four years and I am super excited and pumped to make it official,” Curry said. “I feel like my future is on a successful path now. Nervous for this big step in life, but I couldn’t be prouder of myself and all the bumps in the road I have overcome. I definitely wouldn’t be in this position without my family, especially mom and dad. They have done so much for me and have always been by my side through it all.”

The talented guard is coming off of a season in which Apollo made it to the 3rd Region Semifinals in large part to her success. Curry averaged 15.3 ppg, while also grabbing 3.4 rpg, while helping them make a late push in the postseason.

Curry was named to the 9th District Team following the season and was named to The Owensboro Times All-County Team as well for her play.

With her high school career having come to a close, Curry is excited to have her next steps decided and is ready to get to Bellarmine’s campus. While playing there, she will be studying exercise science in hopes of becoming a physical therapist.

“I chose Bellarmine because I felt at home there,” Curry said. “They have a huge physical therapy program that I am just so eager to get started in. Also, I’m catholic and it’s a private school. I love how they have a chapel on campus so I can attend mass.”

Curry had built a strong bond with the coaching staff at Bellarmine right away, having sat down for lunch with Head Coach Chancellor Dugan and found a lot of common ground. Seeing that along with the family atmosphere and the opportunity to play at the highest level of college basketball, Curry knew Bellarmine was the place for her.

“I love the energy they show in practice towards the teams and the things they teach in practice,” Curry said. “Also, with them just transitioning to play D1 I definitely always wanted to play D1 and I believe I can be a big part of future success at Bellarmine. The family-type atmosphere is also a huge plus about the program. Main thing for me is I just have to get bigger and stronger and I’m willing to put in the work.”

While Curry is ready for the next step in her basketball career she is going to miss all the moments she shared on and off the floor with her teammates, as well as a number of others at Apollo High School.

“I’m going to miss all the team bonding things we did and the pregame dances in the locker room and just all the good times and memories we had with each other,” Curry said. “I’m going to miss Apollo because of all my favorite teachers and staff. I had a great relationship with all of them to where I could come to them about anything and just talk. I will always be an Eagle.”
