Owensboro Catholic split its doubleheader on Saturday, while Daviess County poured in the runs to sweep its doubleheader in the Southern Slam.
Owensboro Catholic vs Anderson County, Bullitt East
The Lady Aces had a rough start to their day against Anderson County, as they couldn’t muster up enough offense and fell 8-2.
The Lady Bearcats applied pressure early, grabbing two runs in top of the first. Anderson County got another one in the top of the second, but Owensboro Catholic showed signs of life in the bottom half.
The Lady Aces took advantage of some walks with two outs, getting a run with some trickery on the basepaths and a solo blast from junior Abbie Dukate to cut their deficit to 3-2. However, Anderson County’s offense couldn’t be stopped.
While Owensboro Catholic was held scoreless for the rest of the game, the Lady Bearcats rattled off five more in order to claim the 8-2 win.
Junior Alexis Hatchett had a rough day in the circle, allowing eight runs—five earned—on 10 hits, while walking two and striking out nine. Meanwhile, Dukate was the only player to record an RBI for the Lady Aces.
Owensboro Catholic was able to bounce back in game two, hanging on late to fend off a comeback for a 5-3 win over Bullitt East.
Determined to turn things around, the Lady Aces got right to work by opening up the scoring. It was an RBI single from freshman Tyranda Stuart that did the trick, giving Owensboro Catholic a 1-0 lead going into the second.
After a scoreless second inning the Lady Aces strung together some hits once again, ending with a two-run single from junior Ashten Tignor to give them a 3-0 lead. Proving strong in all facets of the game, Owensboro Catholic had all momentum in the game.
However, Bullitt East flipped a switch late. The Lady Chargers finally got to junior Brooke Hamilton in the fifth and sixth, quickly knotting things up at 3-3.
Despite back-to-back outs after a leadoff double for the Lady Aces to start the seventh, Owensboro Catholic was able to come up big when it mattered most. The Lady Aces were able to earn two walks, which then led to a hard ground ball that turned into an error by Bullitt East that cost two runs and gave Owensboro Catholic a 5-3 lead.
Brooke Hamilton then proceeded to shut the door 1-2-3, giving the Lady Aces the 5-3 win. Hamilton had a solid day in the circle, giving up three runs on five hits, walking two and striking out nine.
Ashten Tignor led the way at the plate with two RBIs, while Stuart followed with one.
By splitting the two games Owensboro Catholic moves to 8-5 overall, as they will take a day off before its first matchup of the 3rd Region All A Classic on Monday.
Daviess County vs Pike Central, Evansville Memorial
Pike Central got five runs late on Saturday, but Daviess County’s offense was too much to handle as it secured the 12-5 win in game one.
Junior Kayley Payne got the Lady Panthers on the board first, scoring on a wild pitch. A hit by pitch two batters later plated another run, giving Daviess County a 2-0 lead going into the second.
The Lady Panthers kept their foot on the gas in the second, quickly earning a two-run single from senior Hattie Newman. Senior Millie Robert’s added an RBI single of her own the next at-bat, before senior Katie Mewes hit an RBI double to take a 6-0 lead.
Pike Central was able to break through late and score five runs over the fourth and fifth, but Daviess County rattled off six runs over the last three innings to secure the 12-5 victory.
Roberts led the way at the plate with four RBIs, Hattie Newman and sophomore Makayla Rowan had two each and senior Seana Leibfried and junior Kaityln Hill had one each.
The Lady Panthers offensive efficiency followed into game two, grabbing an 11-1 win over Evansville Memorial.
Daviess County wasted no time getting going, getting an RBI single from junior Jessie Daniels and a two-run double from senior Kinsey Vergason to take a 3-0 lead after the first. Evansville Memorial got its lone run of the game in the top of the second, but the Lady Panthers quickly responded.
Daviess County put up a three-spot again in the bottom of the second, getting an RBI double from Daniels and a two-run homer from senior Katie Mewes to make it a 6-0 game. Junior Raylee Roby proceeded to hold Evansville Memorial scoreless for the rest of the game, while the Lady Panthers added five runs in the fourth to go on and claim the 11-1 win.
Roby threw all five innings in the circle, allowing one run on three hits, walking one and striking out nine. Daniels led the way with five RBIs, while Mewes followed behind with three and Vergason chipped in two.
The Lady Panthers now own a seven-game winning streak, sitting at 8-1 going into a district matchup with Apollo at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
