Owensboro and Daviess County both grabbed wins in pitcher’s duels on Friday, defeating Webster County and Woodford County respectively.

Owensboro vs. Webster County

The Lady Devils grabbed an early lead and never looked back on Friday, earning a 2-0 win over Webster County.

Owensboro wasted no time getting on the board, taking advantage of an error for Webster County to start the game. It was following this error that sophomore Paige Hughes delivered a one-out single, driving in the first run of the day.

Following a strikeout to make it two outs in the top of the first, sophomore Sophie Moorman kept things going with an RBI double to give the Lady Devils a 2-0 lead. With the lead, freshman Kirsten Tindle was locked in and held Webster County scoreless while allowing two hits, two walks and two strikeouts in four innings.

Senior Brooklyn Keller picked up right where Tindle left off in relief, holding them scoreless while allowing no hits, no walks and struck out two in three innings in the circle. Moorman and Hughes led the way at the plate, as both recorded an RBI each.

Owensboro moves to 5-11 overall and will get right back to work Saturday morning, as they are set to hit the road and take on Butler County at 10 a.m.

Daviess County vs. Woodford County

Daviess County was able to fend off a late comeback on Friday, extending its winning streak to four games with a narrow 3-2 victory over Woodford County.

The Lady Panthers looked to set the tone for the game early, grabbing the first lead of the ballgame in the second. It was a solo home run from junior Jessie Daniels that did the trick, giving them a 1-0 lead.

However, a steal of home by Woodford County in the bottom of the second quickly knotted things back up at 1-1 going into the third. It was there that Daviess County didn’t give in and let momentum swing drastically, as they took advantage of an error and grabbed a 2-1 lead thanks to a double to right from senior Hattie Newman.

Newman came through again in the top of the fifth, delivering an RBI single to center to give them a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Natalie Kerr helped get Woodford County a run in the bottom half of the fifth, but that would be all their offense could muster as the Lady Panthers secured the 3-2 victory.

Junior Alexis Jackson got the starting nod for Daviess County, allowing two runs—one earned—on four hits, while walking one and striking out three in four and ⅔ innings. Eighth grader Sophia Cain handled the remainder of the game in relief, allowing no hits, no runs and striking out two in two and ⅓ innings in the circle.

Newman led the way at the plate by going 2-4 and earning two RBIs, while Daniels grabbed the other lone RBI of the day. With the win the Lady Panthers improve to 12-3 overall and will get right back to action with a doubleheader on Saturday, taking on Male at 11 a.m. and Bullitt East at 3 p.m.
