For the past few weeks, the Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals have been hosting a costume drive for children. They’ve collected 60 costumes, but drive organizer Jake Boswell hopes to reach 100 before this Friday’s noon deadline.
The drive aims to give students in the school new or gently used costumes, allowing families to clean out their closets while also giving back to the community’s young students.
Boswell said that he learned through his wife the measures that some teachers go to in order to ensure their students enjoy Halloween.
“There are so many students in her classroom and around Owensboro that do not have costumes. And a lot of kids who don’t have costumes won’t trick-or-treat,” Boswell said. “Technically, you don’t need a costume to go door to door or go to the Trail of Treats, but most people won’t unless they do have one.”
After making a few phone calls to Daviess County and Owensboro public school districts, the Young Professionals group was able to determine which schools were in need.
The school systems were ready for the costumes, according to Boswell. He said officials knew there was a need, and immediately named Burns, Foust and Tamarack elementary schools as recipients of the donations.
Donations can be dropped off at Independence Bank’s Frederica and KY 54 locations, at the Chamber of Commerce, or at the schools.
“The schools are kind of like ‘keep them coming.’ I don’t think they can have enough,” he said. “… If a teacher knows a kid is not going to get Christmas presents, I would say at almost every school in Daviess County, a teacher will go buy Christmas presents for that kid. And I think the same thing has been happening for years with Halloween costumes.”
The final day for the drop-off is Friday at noon, so that the schools are able to pass out costumes to the students in time for Halloween events.
