A sophomore at Apollo High School sustained a leg injury after being hit by a vehicle while walking home from school, according to a district official.
According to Charles Broughton, Assistant Superintendent of Student Services at Daviess County Public Schools, the incident occurred shortly after the school day ended.
“Kids were going their different ways, either being picked up, getting on the school bus,” Broughton said. “This student happens to live across the street from Apollo, so she was crossing Gemini Drive, walked between two cars, and for whatever the reason did not see a car that had turned off of Tamarack onto Gemini and was heading towards Southtown. She walked out in front of that vehicle and was struck.”
Broughton said the student suffered a leg injury but is unsure of the extent, adding that she was conscious. The student was transported to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital, with Broughton saying the family was there with her.
Broughton said of the person driving the vehicle, “as soon as they saw her they certainly hit their brakes and tried to stop as quick as they could.”
The Owensboro Police Department worked the incident. Officials said all they can say at this point is the injuries are non-life-threatening.
