Beginning this week, The Pub on Second will start brewing its own beer. Initially rolling out three options in the form of an ale, an IPA, and a brown, owner Bill Brown guarantees something to satisfy the taste buds of any beer enthusiast.
“It’s been a long road, but we’re finally here,” Brown said. “It always takes longer than you think, but we’re excited and know this could be huge for us.”
Long-time assistant brewer at Henderson Brewery and expert in the field, Matt Watson, will head the operation. The team looks for the brewery addition to enhance Owensboro and downtown’s already vibrant tourism industry.
“Being a brewery certainly helps our business and creates opportunities for local hotels and tourism,” Brown said. “When a town has more than one brewery, it gives people in other cities and craft beer lovers in our region a chance to venture from brewery to brewery and create an evening out of it.”
The goal is for the brewery to secure its own location in an already-established restaurant.
“Our goal is to create growth and familiarize people with how good the beers are,” he said. “From there, we want to roll the brewery to a different site and partner with a restaurant in a larger space.”
The Pub on Second first opened its doors on July 1, 2020, at 25% capacity in observance of COVID-19 protocol. Now operating at total capacity with many entertainment options on any given night, they’ll be opening their patio in the coming weeks.
“The patio will be a game changer – there’s an additional 60 seats out there,” he said. “We release new beers every Monday, so whether it’s our’s or any of the other 28 drafts we carry, it will be one dollar off every Monday.”
Tuesdays are one dollar off cans or bottles, Wednesdays are “Whiskey Wednesday” where all whiskeys are one dollar off, and Thursday is trivia night. The trivia night crowd is diverse, with “geniuses” from all over Daviess County testing their skills.
“This is an up-scale, adult lounge, where couples, friends, and family can come in and carry on a conversation,” Brown said. “We offer 100 different beers, 60 different bourbons, and 30 craft martinis.”
The Pub will also play a pivotal role in the 9-day motorsports celebration to honor Nicky Hayden from June 2-10. The event will feature a bike show, racing at Windy Hollow, and a meet-and-greet with Darrel and Michael Waltrip at The Pub on June 4, when the brothers and NASCAR legends will unveil their new beer.
