A 22-year-old man was arrested after boarding an Owensboro Public Schools bus while intoxicated Wednesday morning then attempting to flee law enforcement, according to the Owensboro Police Department.
According to a release, at approximately 6:36 a.m. OPD responded to the intersection of West 3rd Street and Hale Avenue in reference to a suspicious person complaint.
“Officers were advised by Central Dispatch a male subject was at a school bus stop potentially overdosing. Officers arrived and located the male subject on an Owensboro Public School bus yelling at a student. Officers attempted to detain the male subject before he fled on foot from officers running through several yards,” according to OPD.
OPS Public Information Officer Jared Revlett said, “This morning, an individual was at a bus stop and was seen acting erratically and potentially under the influence. Thanks to the quick action by our bus drivers to notice the situation and notify law enforcement, all of our students were transported safely to school. The quick response from OPD helped prevent a potentially dangerous situation and we thank them for their support.”
OPD said officers caught the male subject, identified later as Demetrion Chambers of Owensboro, after a short foot pursuit.
“Once the male subject was apprehended, he began to show signs of an overdose and became unresponsive. Officers administered two doses of Narcan which appeared to reverse the overdose symptoms,” according to OPD.
Chambers was taken to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital for medical treatment. He was later arrested and lodged at the Daviess County Detention Center on the following charges:
- Public Intoxication – Controlled Substance (Excludes Alcohol)
- Criminal Trespassing, 2nd Degree
- Menacing
- Fleeing or Evading Police, 2nd Degree (On Foot)
