Molly’s Mixins – a local gourmet bakery specializing in mega cookies and more — is shutting down operations next month, according to an announcement on their Facebook page Monday. Owner Molly Higgins said in the posts she wasn’t sure if it would be a “goodbye or just a long break,” but for now the last day of sales will by July 14.
“For three years I have taken up space in the baking world and what a whirlwind it has been,” the post reads. “Just as many failures as there has been successes. I have gotten to be a part of and create so many amazing things. It’s been a true honor to bring the concept of a big, crazy, stuffed cookie to a small town in KY.”
She continued, “However, I am tired.. and most days everything feels like a blur. I don’t know if this will turn into a goodbye or just a long break.. but for now July will be our last month of operations. (Making July 14 our last day of online sales).”
One simple Facebook post propelled Higgins into a life of cookies over the last 3 years. She went from baking in her apartment kitchen in Bowling Green while attending Western Kentucky University, to moving home and finding a small kitchen, before transitioning into a location in the basement of Thee Heirloom on Frederica Street.
Higgins was in the midst of finishing up an internship for her dietetics program at Western Kentucky University when she decided to shift her mindset to baking.
“It was never a dream to own a business; I just started baking one day, and with a little push and shove from my family, I turned my favorite hobby into a full-time career,” Higgins said in a March 2022 interview.
In her post Monday, Higgins said owning a business is all-consuming and for the last 3 years her “identity has been Molly’s Mixins. I gave it everything I had and then some.”
She wrote, “It takes real courage to go against the grain and put everything you’ve got into something unknown. I can’t say thank you enough. The gratitude I have felt over the last three years has brought so many good, happy tears. It wasn’t the cookies that kept me going each week… It was you — the customers who turned into friends and family, the friends and family who turned into customers, and each person who played a big or small role in this journey. Thank you all for supporting me, loving my creations, and growing a small cookie community with me.”
Higgins said she has many personal goals she still wants to achieve, and this is “just a small blip of the rest of my life. While it saddens me to say goodbye, I know it’s the best decision for myself and well-being. In order to propel myself forward in the future it’s important that I take a step back.”
She finished by saying she’s not sure what comes next, writing: “I have no idea. Jumping into the unknown yet again.”
