Boilin' in the Boro

Boilin’ in the Boro — an annual fundraiser for Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana — returns to Owensboro for the sixth year on August 19. This year, the nonprofit will host the event at The Grand Stable at 7735 KY-144 in Philpot for the first time.

Make-A-Wish Western Kentucky Senior Advancement Officer Lisa Reeves said they’re excited to use the new venue, which offers increased space for cooking and opportunities for growth.

“Our partner, Brew Bridge, will have more room to work and cook the food,” Reeves said. “The new space is gorgeous, and we’re excited to be there.”

Event guests can indulge in a southern favorite while hearing several local Wish families share their experiences, commonly called “mission moments.” There are also opportunities to bid on live and silent auction packages.

The event has raised more than $450,000 to date, granting 45 life-changing wishes for children from western Kentucky with critical illnesses.

Wish recipient Cody Dorman and his family will be the highlight of this year’s event. Dorman met a foal in Versailles 4 years ago as part of a wish, growing his relationship with the horse and jockey Junior Alvarado over the years.

The horse, craftily named Cody’s Wish, won the Breeder’s Cup at Keeneland in Lexington last year in record fashion.

“We’re excited about having the Dorman family come this year, and we’re going to be granting a wish to a local child,” Reeves said. “It’s a fun and casual event where you don’t have to dress up – you can just be comfortable and enjoy great food for a great cause.”

Make-A-Wish also hosts an online bourbon raffle with tickets available until noon on August 19. To bid on six bottles of highly sought-after bourbon, click here. Organizers will draw for a winner during Boilin’ in the Boro, and participants do not have to present to win.
