Original Story – A statue downtown at the VFW Post 696 was vandalized over the weekend, and the Owensboro Police Department reported vehicles were damaged in the process.
Owensboro Times received a notice that the statue of a soldier had been vandalized over the weekend. Upon arriving at the location, a reporter noticed the head of the statue had been removed, and pieces of the statue were breaking off along with a flag attached to it.
According to Public Information Officer Dylan Evans, the statue was vandalized in the early hours of Saturday morning. No property has been recovered, Evans reported.
The case is being investigated by the Criminal Investigations Division, Evans said.
At 2:17 a.m. on September 30, OPD reported they responded to a call at the VFW that resulted in ‘destruction/damage/vandalism of property’ and ‘larceny from motor vehicle’ charges. Evans confirmed that report is separate from vandalizing of the statue, but due to it being an active investigation, Evans said that he cannot confirm if the incidents are related.
