The Daviess County Public Library and the Owensboro Youth Empowerment Summit are partnering to host a Teen Job Fair on Thursday. The event will run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and allows 14- to 18-year-olds to explore employment opportunities and begin career goals.

The event will be held at the library, with several businesses in attendance to conduct open interviews. Other employers will be onsite sharing information about current available positions.

“We want to give teens in our community an opportunity to get a head start in the workforce. We want them to learn more about how the job search process works and what kind of opportunities are available to them,” said teen librarian Sarah Jacobs. “We also want local employers to see how many assets young workers can bring to their business.”

The two organizations first hosted the event in October 2021 when The Rev. DeMarcus Curry, who founded the Summit, wanted to find a way to assist young people in connecting with employment opportunities during the pandemic. He turned to the library for a facility and guidance.

“Our first job fair was extremely successful, with over 100 teens attending,” Jacobs said. “Since then, we have hosted several teen job fairs; the one this Thursday will be our fifth.”

Attending teens can also meet with representatives from the Human Relations Commission to educate them on their rights in the workplace. Jacobs added that Fifth Third Bank will be available to provide teens with information on how to open a checking and savings account.

Attendees can also hone in on their interview skills with local volunteers conducting mock interviews.
Employers interested in having a booth should connect with Jacobs via email at [email protected].
