Pamela Canary is retiring from her position as the City of Owensboro’s transportation manager on Tuesday, and Vickie Pennington has been named her successor

Canary began serving as transportation manager in 2018 after working with the City for 6 years as the purchasing agent. During her time leading the Owensboro Transit System (OTS), notable changes included the purchase of an all-electric bus, the installation of numerous additional bus shelters, and the addition of solar-powered lights to those shelters.

“I would just like to say thank you for all the opportunities and wonderful memories. It’s been a pleasure and in all of this, every moment, but on to the next chapter,” Canary said.

Canary said moving forward she looks to be able to take care of her family.

Pennington comes into the role with more than 15 years of experience in transportation working for Green River Intra-county Transit System (GRITS) and Pennyrile Area Community Services (PACS). She held numerous positions during her time at GRITS and was transit manager for PACS.

Pennington said that over the years, she’s learned the importance of public transportation to a community.

“It is very important for people to be able to be independent, to be able to not have to worry about other family members or somebody else to get them to where they need to go. I know that in transportation, we transport anything from people to go get their hair done, to pay their bills, or to their life-sustaining appointments and dialysis and stuff like that,” Pennington said.

Pennington said she is excited to take the helm at OTS and to continue serving the community she lives in.

“I am very excited about being able to work here in Owensboro, and to see the clients that I deal with on a daily basis that I actually live with,” she said.
