The City of Owensboro has amended an ordinance to expand alcohol sales on Sundays when Christmas Eve falls on that day.
Kentucky law prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages on Sundays unless the local municipality passes an ordinance to allow the sales in their community. The previous ordinance allowed alcohol sales from 11 a.m. to midnight on Sundays.
When New Year’s Eve falls on Sunday, businesses including restaurants, liquor/spirit stores, and grocery stores can sell alcohol from 6 a.m. on Sunday to 2 a.m. on Monday.
City Manager Nate Pagan said that businesses had reached out regarding an amendment to allow the same sales on Christmas Eve this year.
“A local business asked if we would expand our Sunday hours when Christmas Eve is on a Sunday as it is this year. So we’re changing it just to add Christmas Eve,” Pagan said.
The Commission approved expanding the hours. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve fall on Sundays roughly every 6 years.
