The Owensboro Police Department is hosting a recruitment open house tonight for those interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement. The event is also aimed at getting interested applicants registered for OPD’s Basic Training Academy, tentatively set to begin this spring.

Public Information Officer Dylan Evans said the open house offer information about the application process, the training academy, a OPD’s specialty units including the hazardous device, unmanned aircraft system, accident reconstruction, street crimes, K-9, and evidence collection.

“This is for anyone who’s thought about a career in law enforcement. Maybe they thought about it but didn’t want to pursue it at that time or things came up and stopped them,” Evans said.

The open house will be held at the OPD station at 222 East 9th Street from 4:30-7:30 p.m.

In November, OPD announced it had officially been approved to become a basic law enforcement training academy, meaning recruits can now attend the required 20 weeks of training in Owensboro.

The training center will be a 5,000-square-foot building with 2 classrooms, 3 offices, a kitchen, a fitness area, a simulator room, a firearm cleaning/maintenance room, and bathrooms with locker rooms and showers.
