Dalisha’s Bakery is hosting a one day silent auction for a Martin Luther King Jr. cake in honor of the namesake’s holiday tomorrow. All money raised from the auction will be donated to the Equal Justice Initiative.
The 6″ round cake has 6 layers of vanilla cake with a caramel pecan filing, which Owner Alisha Hardison said she read was one of King’s favorites. The cake also has a portrait of King on a stained glass window.
Hardison said she made the cake as a way to test out stained glass art, but after working on it, she knew she wanted the cake to honor King and she didn’t want to make a profit off of it.
“That’s when I thought I could do an online silent auction in support of the Equal Justice Initiative. I think Bryan Stevenson embodies everything that MLK stood for and I couldn’t think of a more important and impactful organization,” Hardison said.
The cake took over 20 hours to complete, Hardison said. Hardison notes that the cake can feed 12-16 people.
Bidding is current happening until 6 p.m. on Facebook. Bids must be placed in the comment section of the post. The winner will receive the cake tomorrow.
