The Spot Coffee and Finery permanently closed its doors at 217 Williamsburg Square on Sunday, but proprietor Jacob Pendley said they will continue their services with The Spot Coffee Bus and are searching for a new brick-and-mortar location.
Pendley said there were some issues that he and the owner were never able to resolve.
“I received a letter in the mail on January 21, and all it said was that they didn’t wish to renew our lease, and we had 2 weeks to move out and return our keys,” Pendley said.
On January 21, Pendley announced on Facebook that January 28 would be The Spot’s last day in the current location, prompting several dedicated customers to extend support. He said this past weekend was the busiest they’ve ever been, running out of inventory early Sunday afternoon.
Overwhelmed with support from the community, including other local coffee shops, Pendley decided it was best to look toward the future.
“We’re going to get The Spot Coffee Bus out Monday through Saturday every week and post weekly and monthly schedules on our Facebook pages,” Pendley said. “We’re highly disappointed to leave this place after being here for 7 years, but we’re very excited to see what the future holds.”
Pendley is also looking for a new location, one offering the uniqueness that “makes The Spot, The Spot.”
“We’re grateful for the support that’s been shown,” he said. “It broke my heart to see the customers with teary eyes, baffled at how a successful coffee shop could be forced out. We’re all moving past that, though. I’ve put enough of my mental energy into that and want to be happy about the future.”
The Spot offered over 72 local vendors a place to showcase and sell their products for the past 7 years. It also regularly served as a gathering spot for folks from all walks of life. Their mantra has always been “Weirdos welcome.”
“We had something for everyone and had a place where young people could hang out and spend time with friends,” Pendley said. “My employees loved working here, and we’ve had some amazing vendors and customers over the years.”
He continued, “Saying all that, I’m going to find another place, and we will continue doing what we always have: supporting our community.”
