A 1-year-old “likely ingested edible marijuana gummies,” authorities with the Owensboro Police Department said after an investigation into a possible accidental poisoning. The parents are facing numerous charges after a search found several drugs, including meth, in the home.

According to OPD, patrol officers along with AMR and the Owensboro Fire Department responded on August 1 to a home in the 100 block of Byron Court to an accidental poisoning call involving a 1-year-old.

“The parents had requested an ambulance due to the child ingesting an unknown substance and now moving very slowly,” authorities said.

The child was taken to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital before being transferred to Norton’s Children’s Hospital, according to OPD.

The release says that a search warrant was executed at the family residence where patrol officers seized suspected methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia, as well as an empty bottle of THC gummies.

“The investigation revealed the child had likely ingested edible marijuana gummies,” according to OPD.

Officials said the Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) was contacted for assistance and responded to the scene.

The child’s parents, Jesika Riggs, 36, and Patro Stevenson, 47, were arrested and are currently being held at the Daviess County Detention Center.

They were both charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, possession of a controlled substance (meth), possession of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. Riggs was additionally charged with third-degree possession of a controlled substance and a controlled substance not in the original container.
