Edith C. Payne, 90, of Whitesville, Kentucky, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 13, 2024. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church and has been a resident of the Carmel Home for the past seven years. Her faith was very important to her. She turned to it in times of celebration as well as in times of struggle. It was this, along with the strength of her unconditionally loving relationships she had with each of her children and extended family that sustained her. Edith took pride in her home where she raised her family, cooked delicious meals, kept everything ‘spic and span’, worked in the yard, and enjoyed her flower gardens. Edith worked for many years at General Electric in Owensboro. In her leisure time she enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles, playing cards, and visiting with family and friends.
We, of course, think there was no one like our mother. It’s hard for us to imagine this world without her in it, but our faith tells us that she is with God and the angels and our dad and a multitude of loved ones in Heaven, and that comforts us and will sustain us through this loss
She was preceded in death by her parents, Kyran Leo and Mary Delphia Clark; her husband, Herman Payne; three brothers, Bernard Clark, Lawrence Clark, and Arthur Clark; three sisters, Francis Basham, Beulah Robinson, and Lucille Evans; one grandchild, Ryan Junius Payne.
Survivors include five sons Wayne Payne (Joan) of Philpot, Kentucky, Gary Payne (Derk) of Ontario, Canada, John Payne, Mark Payne, and Glenn Payne (Judy) all of Owensboro, Kentucky; one daughter, Diana Beaven (Richard) of Corydon, Kentucky; one sister, Marie Bartlett of Owensboro, Kentucky; fourteen grandchildren, Katie Harralson, Johnny Payne, Curtis Payne, Jason Payne, Marci Riley, Annie Rice, Zachary Payne, Olivia Smith, Jessica Arnold, Alexis Truss, Matthew Beaven, Meredith Beaven, Andrew Payne, Anley Payne; two step-grandchildren, Sarah Garrison and Daniel Truman; twenty great-grandchildren; nieces, and nephews.
Visitation will be from 9:00-10:00 a.m. Friday, August 16 at the Carmel Home, 2501 Old Hartford Road Owensboro, Kentucky and from 3:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, August 16 at Cecil Funeral Home Whitesville, Kentucky, where a prayer service will be at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will also be from 9:00-9:45 a.m. Saturday, August 17 at Cecil Funeral Home Whitesville, Kentucky, followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church Whitesville, Kentucky. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Johnny Payne, Curtis Payne, Jason Payne, Zachary Payne, Matthew Beaven, and Andrew Payne.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Carmel Home.
Special thanks to the Carmel Home staff for providing care during her stay. She will be dearly missed by her friends and family.
