When the 2024 pro soccer season with the El Paso Locomotive FC was coming to a close, Lucas Stauffer and the club agreed to mutually part ways. Weighing his options, it became a match made in heaven when the opportunity arose for Stauffer to return to his home state to join the Lexington Sporting Club in their inaugural season in the USL Championship.
“Being from Kentucky and a product of Kentucky soccer is something that I take immense pride in,” said Stauffer, who plays defender. “I love this state, and being able to join Lexington SC in their inaugural season of USL Championship soccer is a dream come true.”
In the offseasons, Stauffer has always returned to his hometown of Owensboro, and he said there is no place he would rather be.
“The facilities are fantastic, and the club’s ambition is great,” Stauffer said of his new team. “They have a lot riding on the season and have a point to prove and it’s the added pressure.”
Stauffer is determined to help build a successful club in Lexington.
“The fans and ownership have invested their trust and commitment into me,” Stauffer said. “I want to return the favor.”
The 29-year-old’s career dates back to his time at Creighton University where he was named to the All-Big East First Team in 2016 and 2017. In 2018 he was a member of the New York Red Bulls II in the USL Championship. From 2019-2020 and 2021-2022 he played for FSV Wacker 90 Nordhausen and FC Carl Zeiss Jena in Germany before returning home to America to play for Las Vegas Lights FC in 2023.
Appearing in 29 matches last year with the Locomotives, Stauffer scored one goal and added two assists. He intercepted 29 passes, won 37 tackles, and drew 24 fouls.
“Lucas is an attacking full back that provides excellent service,” said Head Coach Terry Boss. “He has a wealth of experience, and we look forward to watching him play in his Old Kentucky Home.”
