A 20-year-old Owensboro man has been charged with assaulting an officer and attempting to flee, according to the Owensboro Police Department.
According to a release, at approximately 6:30 p.m. on January 4, OPD responded to a report of a physical disturbance in the 3800 block of Brentwood Drive.
“Upon arrival, the initial officer attempted to detain a male suspect, who resisted and fled on foot. During the foot pursuit, the suspect turned and deliberately tackled the officer to the ground, then attempted to take the officer’s service weapon,” the release says.
“Additional officers quickly arrived on the scene and assisted in taking the suspect into custody,” according to the release. “During the initial encounter, the suspect dropped a bag containing a loaded extended gun magazine. The investigation of the physical disturbance linked the magazine to a firearm, that was discovered inside the residence.”
The suspect, identified as Vicente Santos, was arrested and lodged in the Daviess County Detention Center on the following charges, according to OPD:
- Disarming a Peace Officer
- Assault, 4th Degree (No Visible Injury)
- Fleeing or Evading Police, 3rd Degree
- Resisting Arrest
- Assault, 3rd Degree (Police Officer)
- Possession of a Handgun by a Convicted Felon
