Update, 6:45 p.m. — A suspect is now in custody after an hours-long standoff near the intersection of Chickasaw Drive and Tamarack Road, according to authorities.

According to a release, at approximately 11 a.m. on February 14, the U.S. Marshals attempted to serve a warrant for murder on a fugitive from Gary, Indiana. The suspect retreated back into the residence barricading himself inside, authorities said. The U.S. Marshals contacted the Owensboro Police Department for assistance with the barricaded suspect.

After several hours, barricaded resolution procedures were implemented and entry was made into the residence, where Rashad Lamar Thompson, 38, surrendered to officers peacefully, according to OPD. Thompson is wanted for murder in reference to an Indiana State Police investigation, the release says.

OPD’s Emergency Response Team, Unmanned Aircraft Systems Unit, Hazardous Device Unit, and Hostage Negotiators were all called to the scene. Detectives with the Owensboro Police Department were still at the residence assisting Indiana State Police detectives with processing the scene shortly after 6 p.m.

Upon being called to assist, OPD established a perimeter and notified Tamarack Elementary School. As a precaution, Tamarack Elementary School was on a lockout (not a lockdown) during much of the incident, meaning no one was allowed to enter or exit the building, district officials said. Authorities did not report any threat to students or staff.
