El Molcajete is expanding in Owensboro, with a second location set to open today, April 9, at 3034 KY 144 in the former El Toribio building.
Owners Luder Villanueva and Onoel Castilla first opened El Molcajete at 2845 West Parrish Avenue in 2019 — just before the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the difficult timing, they said the restaurant has grown steadily and developed a loyal customer base.
“It was a tough time when we opened, but after that we started doing good, and thank God we’re still there,” Castilla said. “We’ve had the opportunity to open another location, and a lot of people have been asking us to do just that — especially on this side of town.”
The new restaurant features a full-service bar, new TVs, and a large outdoor patio with nine tables and umbrellas. Castilla said they’ve been working hard to get the space ready, and the patio should be especially popular as warmer weather approaches.
They’re currently leasing the building but said they hope to buy it if the opportunity becomes available.
The menu will remain the same, offering what Castilla describes as more authentic Mexican cuisine, with unique touches that set them apart from other local spots. Popular items include wings, burgers, street tacos, and more.
“We try to cook a little different than others — more authentic, with a little spice and flavor that makes it stand out,” Villanueva said.
Drink specials will mirror those at the original location, including two-for-one lime margaritas on Mondays and Thursdays, and a $6.99 large lime margarita on Fridays and Saturdays.
The restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Villanueva said they’ve already hired kitchen staff and are finalizing front-of-house hires ahead of opening. He and Castilla plan to split their time between the two locations but emphasized the importance of staying involved to maintain quality and service.
“We just want to keep all our customers happy,” Villanueva said. “That’s the most important thing. We’d just like to welcome everybody and thank the community for the support. We hope they like it and come see us.”
