A new Storybook Walk will soon greet visitors at Legion Park, offering families an outdoor literacy experience aimed at inspiring curiosity, physical activity, and quality time together.
The Public Life Foundation’s Checkmarks initiative, in partnership with the Daviess County Public Library (DCPL) and Owensboro Parks & Recreation, will unveil the project during a free, family-friendly event on Thursday, May 1 at 4 p.m. Free children’s books will be available while supplies last.
“Thanks to the generosity of the Public Life Foundation and the Owensboro Parks and Recreation Department, DCPL can reach more families with the creation of the new StoryWalk at Legion Park,” said Taryn Norris, Children’s Librarian at DCPL. “We hope this new fixture will encourage families to connect with each other while engaging in physical activity and taking advantage of all the fun activities the park has to offer. Early literacy opportunities and family engagement can happen anywhere.”
The Storybook Walk features a children’s book displayed across a series of permanent panels along the walking path, inviting families to read and move together in a scenic park setting. The project aligns with Checkmarks’ mission to promote kindergarten readiness through community-based learning experiences rooted in being Curious, Healthy, Engaged, Confident, and K-Ready.
“A key strategy of Checkmarks is to enhance opportunities for experiential learning throughout the community,” said Joe Berry, Executive Director of the Public Life Foundation. “The City of Owensboro’s Parks Department and Daviess County Public Library are ideal partners in making this goal a reality. The Storybook Walk concept has proven very popular at Moreland Park, and we are incredibly excited to expand this fun and interactive learning activity to Legion Park.”
Families, caregivers, and children of all ages are invited to attend the unveiling and enjoy a day celebrating learning, play, and imagination.
