Harlan Ray Harney Sr.

March 13, 1939 - June 9, 2019

Harlan Ray Harney Sr. , 80 of Owensboro passed away Sunday, June 9, 2019 under the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. Born March 13, 1939 in Stanley to the late William and Louise Strobel Harney, Ray served in the U.S. Navy and after being discharged began working at Whirlpool from which he retired in 1979. Having a great work ethic and being very mechanically inclined and able to do about anything from woodworking to auto mechanic, he decided to open Harney Auto Body Shop in Stanely. Ray was a past Master of the Stanley Masonic Lodge 878. He loved people and enjoyed his friends just “hanging out” at the body shop. Sometimes he would cook for them and enjoyed making his favorite dish, vegetable soup.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Harney also was preceded in death by his brother, William Harney and sisters, Thelma Harvey and Lucille Owens.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 58 years, Carolyn Sue Saalwaechter Harney; son, Harlan Ray Harney Jr; daughter, Susannah Harney all of Owensboro; three grandchildren, Rachael McDaniel, Ashley Alsup (Adam), and Perry Lane Harney; seven great grandchildren, Logan McDaniel, Madison McDaniel, Caylan McDaniel, Matthew Alsup, Anthony Alsup, William Alsup, and Payton Alsup; several nieces and nephews.

The service for Harlan Harney will be 10:00 am Friday, June 14 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be Thursday from 3:00 until 8:00 with a Masonic ceremony at 6:30 and Friday from 9:00 until time of service at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens with military honors.
