The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred early Saturday morning near the Henderson County line.
According to a release from the Sheriff’s Office, Central Dispatch received a call around 5 a.m. reporting an accident with injuries in the 10400 block of U.S. Highway 60 West. Emergency crews responded and found a vehicle approximately 30 feet off the roadway and a broken utility pole nearby.
The lone occupant of the vehicle was found deceased inside the car.
A preliminary investigation by the DCSO Accident Reconstruction Unit revealed that the vehicle was traveling westbound when it left the roadway for unknown reasons, struck the utility pole, and rolled before coming to rest in a field partially submerged in water. The area had been affected by storms the night before.
Officials believe the crash occurred during the night but went undetected until a passing motorist noticed wires over the roadway, exited his vehicle to investigate, and discovered the vehicle in the field.
The Daviess County Coroner’s Office is also investigating the death.
U.S. Highway 60 was closed in both directions while the Daviess County Fire Department, Stanley Fire Department, and Kenergy crews responded to the scene and replaced the utility pole. The road was expected to reopen by mid-morning.
