RiverValley Behavioral Health is offering a free training to help community members recognize and respond to suicide warning signs.

The Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) Suicide Prevention Training is scheduled for 5:30-7 p.m. on May 30 at The Gathering Pointe (400 East 4th Street). The event is free and open to the public.

“As we observe Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s crucial that we empower our community with the tools to help save lives,” said Dr. Wanda Figueroa-Peralta, President & CEO of RiverValley Behavioral Health. “With the recent increase in local suicide deaths, this training could not come at a more important time.”

QPR is an evidence-based program that teaches participants how to recognize the signs of a suicide crisis and how to respond effectively. The method is often compared to CPR as a potentially lifesaving intervention that can be administered by anyone, regardless of professional background, a release from RVBH said.

Nationally, suicide is the 11th leading cause of death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, claiming more than 49,000 lives in 2023. In Kentucky, suicide rates remain above the national average, with more than 800 deaths reported annually, according to the release.

Those interested in attending the May 30 training can pre-register at this link.

RiverValley also offers additional mental health education and suicide prevention programs for the public. Organizations or groups interested in hosting a training can learn more at rvbh.com/training.

Anyone in crisis or needing support can call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for free, 24/7 confidential assistance.
